Hands-On Theory: Fun with Fiddle Tunes

Price

$35.95

A guide for teachers and those who teach themselves. Veteran string teacher, Amy Matherly, shares twenty-three tunes (including two three-tune sets) she has taught her students over the years, along with the ways she has incorporated relevant theory concepts into lessons and group classes. The tunes were chosen because students love them and are highly motivated to play them. The book is organized into three substantive Parts:

Part One – The Basics

This section presents four fiddle tunes, each introducing several important skills and concepts, including key, meter, form, rhythm, and chords. Start by having students learn the tune and then cover one or all of the activities as suits. Wrap up by performing the tune with accompaniment.

Part Two – Getting Into It

The tunes, accompaniment parts, and theory topics are more advanced, adding on to what was covered in Part One. Each includes a performance arrangement.

Part Three – Creating Arrangements

This section presents ideas and techniques for creating accompaniments and arrangements. Use the examples presented to inspire students to get creative with the tunes that they love.
